Nerf Recon CS-6 attachment modifications

Introduction
This is a guide to show how you can improve two of the least loved Nerf gun attachments, the "dual-mode light beam" and the "flip-up sight" that come with the Recon. If you think that these parts are completely useless, then this guide is probably not for you.

Disclaimer
The light beam mod has worked fine for me, even with brand new Lithium batteries, however this is not a guarantee that it will work for you and it might blow the LED - although that is unlikely. The flip-up sight mod is not reversible, so be sure that you want to do it before starting. As usual, I am not responsible for any injuries or damages that occur whilst following this guide.

Light Beam

This mod noticably increases the brightness of the red light. It is simple to do however you will need a soldering iron or hot glue gun. It could probably be done with other glues or tape but that may be tricky.

Step 1
Remove the battery cover (by unscrewing the screw that the arrow is pointing towards), then put some AAA batteries in, it is easier to do this to start with. Test that the light is functioning then unscrew the remaining 5 screws.

Step 2
Take apart the two halves of the light and slide out the battery compartment and switch. You should notice a small circuit board. You need to bridge the two solder points circled in the next picture. You should test that joining them up makes the light slightly brighter. Don't worry if you get the wrong bottom one and the light turns off, and don't worry if you see sparks, that only means your batteries are fully charged ;)

Step 3
A small wire or even paper clip can join the two points. Be careful not to leave the soldering iron or hot glue gun on either contact for more than a few seconds, as you might heat up the LED too much causing it to break. You wire needs to go NOT where my red wire is, but where the blue line is. I had to later bend my red wire into that position because it blocked the notch on that side of the circuit board.

Step 4
Put the everything back together, check that it still works, and then put all of the screws back in. Your light beam should now be a little bit brighter!

I'm might look into replacement white LED's and other ways to improve this accessory. I tried some I had lying around and although they made better torches (being white), they were not any brighter than the red.

Flip-up Sight

This simple mod (or "removement") makes the sight a viable option to actually use in a Nerf gun fight. With the orange piece on, the sight is very difficult to see through/look down as the hole is so small. Even if you do manage it in the heat of battle, you won't be able to see where your dart goes because it will probably be off to one side slightly. This is just as much a cosmetic modification as it is a functional one, many people think the sight looks nicer without the orange piece. If your not yet convinced, watch the short video.

Step 1
Find your biggest flat-head screwdriver, this is the only tool you will need.

Step 2
Rotate the circular piece counter-clockwise as far as it will go to loosen it. This will also make it slightly further away from the black bits we want to keep intact.

Step 3
Position the screwdriver as shown here, and slowly wiggly it in pretty much every direction, trying to seperate the front and back orange pieces. Try not to bend the black parts whilst doing this. If it seems very hard to seperate the bits, try flipping it over and doing the other side. You will need to use quite a lot of force.

Step 4
You should end up with a few "broken" parts like this. You can pull off the orange back piece and your done!

A modern review of the Nerf N-Strike Recon CS-6

The Nerf Recon CS-6 was released in 2008 and is still today the second best selling Nerf blaster in the UK. Most reviews of the gun do not take into consideration the multitude of new comparable foam blasters since the Recon was released, and I hope therefore that this review can be useful to anyone considering buying one (or another one) in the near future.

Introduction
The Recon is a modular Nerf gun, which can hold 6 (or 7 if you squish them) foam darts in removable orange magazines. It is primed by sliding the large grey top section of the blaster backwards and then pushing it forwards again. The Recon is very comfortable and easy to use, even for people with massive hands due to it's slightly-larger-than-children's-toy size. The average firing range of the Recon is around 25-30 ft, a perfect combination of distance vs "ouch you hit my nose" (I.e. not painful at close range) for indoor wars. This range can be increased significantly above even 80 ft with modifications which will be covered in another post.

Attachments
The stock which comes with the Recon can hold an extra ammo clip, (which must be bought separately - more on this later), and is more sturdy than it looks. The extended barrel has been found to very slightly decrease the blasters range, but also adds two tactical rails to the front of the blaster for other attachments. The red dot "laser" attachment requires two AAA batteries and emits a weak red light. This piece is almost useless unless modified due to the red-dots near invisibility in bright light, and the fact that you can aim a Nerf blaster well enough by eye. There is also a small aiming-piece included but this suffers from the same "un-needed" issue as the red dot part.

Comparisons
The Recons biggest rival, is the slightly cheaper, best selling Nerf Maverick. Most experienced Nerfers see the Recon as a straight up upgrade from the Maverick, as the Recon has slightly longer ranges, more customization and modification options/potential, and has removable magazines that can be switched much faster than reloading all 6 chambers of the Maverick. That being said, the Maverick is a better blaster to start modding with because of it's more simple firing mechanism, lower price and the amount of very basic mods that can be done to it - like making the barrel swing out further.

A more recent competitor to the Recon is the Nerf Barricade RV-10,this blaster suffers the same downsides as the maverick in terms of range, modability and lack of removable magazines (or not), as well as being noisy because it is an electronic fly-wheel blaster. However the Barricade does have the huge advantage of being able to be dual wielded.

The Recon can also be compared to the Deploy CS-6, Alpha Trooper CS-18 and Raider CS-35, all of which have "shotgun" grips rather than the on-top-pistol system. These blasters are quicker to fire, with the Raider and Alpha Trooper being able to achieve a great rate of fire because of the "slam fire" function and ammo capacity. The Recon, however, is significantly smaller than all of these without it's attachments (or not, again), and is more modular and much easier to open up and modify. I also find the Recon to have a more sturdy feel than the Deploy.

Customization
The Recon can use nearly all of the Nerf N-Strike accessories, most importantly, I highly recommend getting extra 6-dart clips, or even trying to get hold of an 18-dart Stampede clip or two off ebay.

The Recon can use the Raiders collapsible stock - which is widely regarded as better than the Recons usual - as well as the Raider's awesome 35-dart ammo drum. The Raiders drum is too heavy to allow some people to use the Recon as a pistol with it attached, and it is also slightly uncomfortable to use with your hands on the extended barrel/red dot attachments because the drum sticks out so much to the side.

Below are a couple of examples of how I use my Recon. The first is using the Stampedes front grip, making it more comfortable to use the Raiders drum mag. The second includes a high-powered extra-shot hacked into the red-dot attachment and a modified, easier to see through sight. I'm hoping to get some paint on this thing soon, so look out for it!

Conlusion
Overall, I would reccomend this blaster to anyone. It's design has stood the test of time (not as much as the Longshot of course), and it's versitility makes it suitable for people new to shooting eachother with foam, Nerfers with several blasters, and even new or experienced modders who may be trying to get huge ranges (visit Orange Mod Works if your one of them).

Pros:

Cheapest and easiest to modify clip-accepting blaster.
Smallest and lightest clip-accepting blaster.
Range is better than the Maverick, and similar to larger blasters.

Cons:

High cost if buying more clips is taken into account.
Pistol-priming slower than pump-action"shotgun priming".
No slam fire.
Low capacity clips (6 darts).
Stock is not as sturdy as the Raiders.
Attachments have limited functionality.

I've been away a long time, but thanks to several different reasons, I've started Nerfing again. Whilst this blog has been inactive, there have been a few new notable changes in the UK Nerf scene, these are:

The glorious Long Shot CS-6 has been re-released at Toys'R'Us. This is a great blaster if you didn't already know. The price tag is high, but it's worth it if you are a modder or want the best of the best (which isn't fully-automatic like the Stampede).

The Nerf Barricade RV-10 has been released and is a reasonable price at Play.com. As they are semi-automatic and a low price, if you have big hands and don't mind some noise, they are fantastic for dual-wielding. Here's a great review by SG Nerf.

The Nerf Alpha Trooper CS-18 is available at Argos, although is over-priced if you include the £5.95 delivery cost. Here's another review by SG Nerf.

Orange Mod Works, a new company providing Nerf modding resources, have set up a website with an in-depth modding guide for the Nerf Recon CS-6. They are also releasing high performace replacement internal parts for several Nerf blasters, starting with the Recon. I'm being sent the first kit now and will have a review up of it in the next couple of weeks. I'm expecting great things!

In other, less important news:

The Nerf Barrel Break IX-2 is available at Toys'R'Us, but is overpriced unless your REALLY love double-barrel shotgun toys.
The beastly Nerf Stampede ECS has gone down in price over at Play.com, it's now only £42.79 with free shipping.
Nerf have released several different colour schemes for existing blasters, and some new Dart Tag blasters, but not in the UK yet.
Nerf/Hasbro have released a good looking, but generally under-whelming set of Super Soakers this year.
The Nerf N-Strike Havok Fire EBF-25 has become rare, and very expensive.
The Longstrike CS-6 is still over-priced everywhere (still more expensive than the Raider CS-35.

About this blog:
The UK stocklist is currently very outdated. I will probably be taking this page down or simplifying it because I cannot spend as much time as I used to managing it. The Location Database, on the other hand, is still relevant and I urge any avid Nerfers from the UK to put themselves on it too.

UK Dart Tag Tournament

Nerf4Hire is holding the first large unofficial Dart Tag tournament in the UK this year. Here's what's going on:

On the 3rd of July we will be starting the qualifying rounds for the UK's first dart tag tournament. We are looking for teams of 4 Aged 8-15 to battle it out for the UK champion title and a £400 cash prize. The final will be held on the 4th September 2011 .

Parents may stay to watch the tournament, go home, or there is a lovely tearoom next door. There will be food, drink and nerf guns for sale all at reasonable prices. If you can't get a team together contact us anyway and we will try and find a team for you to join. All players are welcome no matter there ability. So please send us an entry form, take a look at the schedule and terms and conditions.

More qualifying rounds will be held between July and September 2011, entry for the qualifying rounds will open around March but there are three ways of making sure you get a place:

Nerf Stampede!

First of all, anyone who followed the blog in the past will (hopefully) be glad to know, I'm back!

Nerf have released the Stampede! One of the most expensive and complex Nerf blasters ever made. The Stampede is the first fully automatic clip fed Nerf blaster, the first Nerf gun to come with more than 2 clips and is probably the most anticipated product Nerf has ever created. The blaster comes with one 6-dart clip, THREE 18-dart extended clips (it can also take 36-dart drum mags), a removable "shield" and a pop-out bi-pod/grip.

Like the Nerf Vulcan/Havok Fire, the blaster uses a 6 D-type battery compartment for its power, which can easily take alternative batteries to produce higher rate of fire.

Unlike the Nerf Vulcan, the Stampede is able to fire reliably from any angle, and is lighter and more maneuverable.

Deploy CS-6 and Flip Clip, coming to the UK soon!

Thanks to an anonymous poster on my UK Stocklist page, I have discovered that the Deploy CS-6 and Flip Clip accessory are being released in the UK far sooner than expected. I consider this important enough news, that it gets its own post!

The Deploy CS-6 is due to be released on Play.com on the 28th of May and costs £17.99. It comes with a carry strap (a first for a Nerf blaster, a welcome change in my opinion) and has a torch which requires 3 AAA batteries. Here is a great review by SG Nerf of the blaster.

The Flip Clip is being released on Play.com on the 11th of June and costs £11.99. It comes with two standard 6-dart magazines, a flip clip section, and 30 Streamline darts. This product makes clip-system Nerf guns far more cost-effective in the UK, as before there was no way to get multiple clips other than to buy several Nerf blasters.

Big Salvo Foam Rocket Launcher Mod - Get it firing normal darts!

Here is great way to get a decent dart blaster with a good rate of fire and range - fully pumped between around 40ft and 60ft flat, depending on what darts you use. It will also still be able to fire the stock ROCKETS, without any range loss or switching of parts. Note that you can pump the gun less to speed up reload times and make the gun more suitable for indoor wars.
This is a very simple mod, which involves 100% no unscrewing, gluing, or anything else which may be considered ~~life-threatening~~ complicated.

You will need:
Lanard Big salvo
Pliers
Sticky (Sellotape) or electrical tape.
And the magic ingredient, 4 sections of 3" long 1/2" CPVC

Now I bet your thinking either "what on earth is CPVC, and where do I get it?" or "I've read about CPVC on NerfHaven, but where do I get it?" if it's the second of those two, then skip straight to the next paragraph. CPVC is piping usually used for specialist jobs like handling corrosive materials. Most importantly though, it has a perfect (tight) fit for stock Nerf darts. Also it has thick walls which is good for this modification as it helps keep the new barrels in the correct place.

Unfortunately 1/2" CPVC is tricky to get hold of in the UK. ~~However I've imported some from the USA and I am selling it in pre-cut sections for £10 for four 3" length pieces, with free P&P.~~ I have now sold out of CPVC, but may purchase more if requested. These pieces are exactly the right size for the mod and have one slightly rounded end, to allow darts to be pressed in more easily.
First, get your big salvo and shoot or pull off the rockets. This will expose the black posts your going to turn into barrels. Tear, cut, ply, rip (etc.) off the "air restrictors" that are on the ends of the posts, I used pliers and quite a bit of levering on mine.

Next, grab your 3" sections of CPVC. Wrap the middle in a couple of layers of sellotape, or one layer of electrical tape, then shove them into the black posts (smoother looking end outwards obviously). The CPVC should be a tight fit, so that you can push it in, but is a struggle to take it back out. Add or remove tape depending on the fit.

Here it is finished! With (left to right) a streamline dart, stock rocket, fully pushed in streamline dart (improves range and accuracy a bit), and a whistler dart.

My Nerf Armoury Vol.3 - Raider CS-35

In my opinion the Raider is an awesome gun. It's range isn't anything like modded Nitefinders (or my Big Salvo, which will be in my next post) however what it lacks in power, it easily makes up in rate of fire and ammo capacity.

Disclaimer: Modifications may wear out or damage your blaster, I take no responsibility for people trying to do the same as me and breaking any part of their blaster.

I did a few mods to my Raider, the first was an Air Restrictor (AR) removal, by using the "pipe-cutter" method. I found that cutting slightly closer to the dip achieved a better result as the inside section then had more pipe to glue to (ask if your performing the mod and your not sure what I mean). I did not put any padding to protect the plunger tube.

I took off the safety catch which only lets you prime the blaster if there is a magazine in it, it was quite obvious what it was and was simple to remove. This lets me load darts into the gun by hand, by doing this I can push the darts in further than they would otherwise go.

I did a "power stock" mod for the blaster. This mod makes the blaster harder to prime but adds around 10' to the range. I used a maverick spring and ended up gluing it to the plunger tube to improve reliability. The mod involves cutting the end of the plunger tube cover off, gluing a short plastic piece to the plunger and putting a spring in between the plunger and inside of the stock (again if you have questions please ask). Here is a picture of what it looks like when I take the stock off and prime the blaster:

The stock streamlines used to tend to swerve at around 20' making the gun useless at any range above that, however they are now accurate to around 30', or 35' if I load the darts singly.

I will probably add to this post after I have some more Nerf war experience with the blaster.

In case it isn't obvious enough already, I would like to point out three new additions to this website. The two pages can be accessed by the links under the "UK NERF" heading at the left of the blog. They will be updated and improved regularly.

First off is the UK Nerf stocklist, which is extremely useful if your considering buying a blaster, as it shows where to get the best deals on Nerf products.

Secondly, I have created a map to contain information about where "nerfers" in the UK are, where shops to buy Nerf products are, and other Nerf related things. This map is called the UK Nerf Location Database (or UKNLD for short). It can be edited by anyone, and I would appreciate it if you, yes you (unless you don't live in the UK, then not you), could contribute to it, at least with your location.

Another new thing is the search box on the right. This can not only search this blog, but also other Nerf blogs and Nerf forums. Go on, give it a go.

My Nerf Armoury Vol.2 - Mavericks

First off is my black, gold and "leather" Maverick. Yes, I painted over the orange tip. I do not plan on even taking this gun out of my house, so I'm not going to get arrested or shot. This has had its air restrictors removed and a couple of flat (run out of power and flat dimension-wise) batteries put in behind the spring. It is freaking noisy, but has been fired hundreds of times and not broken.

Here is my Girlfriends orange Maverick that I painted for her :D Completely stock internals, and it is colourful enough to use outside. The "wood" grip looks awesome in sunlight, quite proud of it really.

I also have a non-painted Maverick which I use more in games. It's had its air restrictors removed, the spring "stretched", and the rotating clip now swings out further.

My Nerf Armoury Vol.1 - Nitefinder

Over the next few weeks (or maybe months if I'm slow), I will be "showing off" my Nerf blasters, one by one on the blog. First off is my smallest, slowest firing, but my most modded and most powerful gun, my Nitefinder.

After getting the gun and putting a couple of batteries in it, you will find that the "red light beam" is awful. I found a simple free way to improve it, all you need is a couple of centimeters of tin foil:

After using this a bit, I found that it was still almost useless. This is because I rarely used it to help aim, as usually I just point the blaster in the general direction of the enemy and fire, and also the lens in the front of the gun moved out of place every time the blaster was put down (If asked I'll explain in more detail).

To make use of space left after I took the "targeter" assembly out, I put in a small single AAA LED torch. This fitted extremely well with only a bit of sanding to get it to fit. I then soldered some new wires in to get everything working. And yes, I am now using 2 AA batteries to power a AAA torch, it is now very bright, and I am confident it is not going to blow the LEDs.

I added a Nerf Firefly spring to the gun which fits brilliantly and has given it significantly more power. (Its the smaller one on the inside in the picture).

I also did an air restrictor removal type procedure, where I used boiling water, a sharp craft knife, and a flat head screwdriver to melt the glue and take out a large section of the firing mechanism. I then replaced that part with a (heavily glued in to make airtight) thick rubber pad with a 5(ish)mm whole drilled through the middle. This mod allows more air to go through to push the dart out, increasing range. It also allows the plunger to travel slightly further into the gun, and the rubber cushions the impact.

Did you notice the metal bar in the picture of the gun with the light on? Well it's a magnet, so I can do this:

As you will have noticed, there is also a large rubber band on the gun, this increases ranges by I'm guessing another 10ft. I will measure exact ranges if there is enough requests. I think I have given the gun the most power it can handle without a barrel replacement, which I don't currently have supplies for. Unfortunately the accuracy of this gun isn't great, as every so often one of the darts fired will fishtail/spin awkwardly in the air.

If you participate in outdoor Nerf wars, or like "sniping" (I use that term extremely loosely) I would recommend this over the maverick because it can achieve twice as good range with just some rubber bands attached, or over three times the range - like mine - with internal mods as well. However if you play in very confined spaces or with small children then the Maverick would be a better choice, because its significantly faster rate of fire will be much more important than power.

Nerf Longstrike CS-6 : Review!

Something all you have been waiting for..(referring to the Nerfers)

I present, the Longstrike CS-6!

The Longstrike CS-6 is known as the longest Nerf blaster in the N-Strike line, it's longer than a Longshot with its Front Gun attached to it by 1 inches+, measuring over 3 feet long. Out of the box, you get 1 clip, the main blaster(disassembled), barrel extension, the butt stock, 1 flip-up sight, priming handle/knob, 6 darts, and instructions.

To many others' displeasure, the Longstrike has internals similar to to the Raider and Recon, otherwise known as a Reverse-plunger, which delivers lesser air to the dart to make it propel further compared to that of a Longshot(Direct plungers deliver larger amount of air to the dart, so the dart flies further).

Nerf Raider - Review!

Welcome back to another review for UKnerf. The Nerf raider CS-35 is another edition to the Clip-system range, surely enough it doesn't damage the reputation of the clip fed guns. The set includes one Nerf Raider foam blaster, one 35 drum magazine/clip and 35 streamline darts.

It cost around £30.00-£35.00 depending from where you buy it from. The gun has a massive 35 drum magazine, i personally think its ridiculous and prefer to use the recon and longshot clips. The gun is not meant for accuracy it is a close range gun that is used to shoot and shoot until you hit your target. You can use it in two ways, single shot (you cock the gun then fire) and slam fire (hold the triger and cock as fast as you can).

The gun itself seems very stirdy, easy to move around with and to fire, assuming that you use the CS-6 clips. It is basicly the same as the recon but seems to jam less. It holds a dart in the handle has an easy access hatch for when you jam. The stock has four settings so if your like me you put it on to the longest setting, but for younger nerfers you will have it shorter. The recon stock can also be used.

So, overall a great primary which can shoot until you hit. With easy reloading and decent ranges this is a must have for any nerf fan!

Nerf Lonstrike - Update!

The long awaited follow up to the previous upcoming longstrike post.

Ok, the circled areas are 1. This looks like the recon sight combined with a pinpoint sight, looks awesome and suits the gun. 2. It looks to have a removable barrel, maybe to be added to the longshot or recon. 3. It has the six dart clip-system like the raider, longshot and recon. 4. It also looks to have two clip holders each side of the stock which will be handy in wars.

Overall this looks to be a great gun and a must have on any nerfers list when it comes available. p.s if you take this information and pictures remember to give credit, not to be selfish but to direct more people to these blogs. Thanks.

Nerf Rapid Fire AS-20- Review!

The following review is not by me, it is from ILiekNerf a singaporean nerfer. All credit goes to him.

The N-Strike Rapid Fire AS-20 includes the AS-20 Blaster itself and 20Micro Darts. Its costs up to a total of S$85 when all of the costs(Original price + Shipping) are totalled. The AS-20 is a automatic blaster which is powered by its internal air tank, which is in turned primed by the priming stick attached to it. Pumping the priming stick 30-35 times will fill up the air tank. When the trigger is squeezed, the compressed air will be forced out to propel the darts. The AS-20 also features 2 Firing Modes : Rapid Fire(Full Blast) mode and Single Shot(Semi-Automatic) mode, allowing users to switch if situations in a war change. The AS-20 itself is alittle bulky, nontheless, its more versatile and the ROF is higher than a vulcan.

Nerf Strikefire Dart Tag set : Review!

Welcome to Uknerf's first review, the Nerf strikefire dart tag set.

The set includes two Nerf Strikefires, two tagger vests, two pairs of strange looking glasses and 12 tagger darts. It cost a £19.99 in all which is great value for what you get. The Strikefire is a single shot manual load pistol, i personally like the rapid fire guns but you need some back up when you need to pump your primary. The ranges of this gun stock are awesome about 25- 30 feet, i added another o-ring to each so mine get about 35 feet. Another good thing about this gun is how many darts it can hold, six in total (including the one that shoots). The gun is easy to move around with and fun to dual wield, a bit hard to reload though.
